Big Sandy Rancheria Tribal Chairperson Connie Lewis announced April 9, 2004 the formal opening of the new facility that "will serve our whole mountain community." The Big Sandy Rancheria Multi-Purpose Center is the first of its kind in this area and has partnership with the Owens Valley Tribal TANF Program to provide recreational activities and services to families in need.
While there is still a long way to go in helping families reach the opportunities that should be open to them, this will move them a few steps ahead. We know that mountain families face the same issues as families in urban areas. Families are under attack, our children face drugs in the schools, there is little to do after school to provide positive activities, and that's when children typically get in trouble. One of the goals of this partnership is to create opportunities and provide services to the community including recreation.
"This is another milestone event for the Big Sandy Rancheria and the whole community." "There has been so much positive support and input from the people of this community and it is appreciated." "We are optimistically looking forward to the future and are thankful for the blessings that we have received" said Lewis. The Owens Valley Tribal TANF program and other youth and senior programs should make a positive impact on the entire community.
