JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Head Start Teacher

SUPERVISOR: Head Start Director

WAGE: Salary Depending on Experience

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Teacher will report directly to the Head Start Director. The Teacher is responsible for planning, promoting, providing, and documenting a safe, healthy environment that meets or exceeds Head Start requirements and program performance standards.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Submit monthly reports and required paperwork to the Head Start Director
  • Daily lesson plans that are prepared and implemented in accordance with the BSR Tribal Head Start education component and objectives.
  • Maintain constant and overall supervision of children during Head Start sessions and services. This includes, but is not limited to, classroom time, indoor and outdoor play, meal times, in lavatories and when other activities occur.
  • Will be responsible for the appropriate classroom arrangement to attractively set-up a neatly organized and user-friendly learning environment.
  • Must complete pre-and post-developmental assessment annually for each child. Screening shall be completed within 45 days of child's entry to program.
  • Will include Mental Health and Nutrition activities in the curriculum.
  • Will provide training to Teacher Assistants in teaching methods, child development concepts and activities and discipline guidance.
  • Must serve as a role model for all Head Start staff, parents and volunteers.
  • Conduct at least two (2) home visits each year to keep parents informed of their child's growth and development.
  • Encourage parents to become involved whenever possible to build positive relationships between families and the center.
  • Must attend Parent committee meetings and other extra curricular Head Start activities that are part of the individual site operations, activities, plans, or services. These may include working on weekends and evenings.
  • Must be willing and available to attend and participate in staff meetings, pre-service and in-service trainings, seminars, conferences, and other program and development oriented activities whether on-site or in other locations.
  • Document and keep accurate files on each enrolled child.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly calendar and newsletter for parents.
  • Able to demonstrate sound and mature judgment.
  • Ability to understand the difference and diversity of different cultural groups.
  • Position requires occasional over night travel. Requires ability to drive up to 7 hours a day.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess

    •  AA degree in Child Development /Early Childhood Education; or

    •  Valid Child Development Associates (CDA) certificate.

    •  Current physical exam, tuberculosis test clearance, and criminal background fingerprint clearance.

    •  Valid, unrestricted CDL and ability to be insurable under BSR's automobile insurance. If employee has a valid license from another state, he/she must obtain a CDL within two months of hiring date.

    The position requires an awareness and keen appreciation of Indian traditions, customs, and socioeconomic need, and the ability at all times to meet and deal effectively in contracts with Indian health organizations consisting of numerous tribes with varied cultures which requires tact, courtesy, discretion, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive nature.

All of the above must be on the file in Human Resources before start of employment.
